INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Adzuki Bean/Chì Xiǎo Dòu 赤小豆

Vigna angularis — the small red bean,
used in TCM since the Shennong Ben Cao Jing to drain dampness, support the spleen, and nourish blood.

FORMULA ROLE

Why LunarSip uses it.

Adzuki bean gives LunarSip's Five Red Vitality Tea its gentle, grounding body. In Chinese home tradition it is one of the five red foods — with brown sugar, red date, goji, and red-skin peanut — simmered to restore colour and energy. In this 6-ingredient blend, adzuki bean balances the warming sugar and sweet fruit with its lightening, dampness-draining character, so the tea nourishes without feeling heavy.

HOW IT'S USED

The red bean that lightens and nourishes.

In Chinese herbal practices, Chì Xiǎo Dòu — 赤小豆 — is recorded in the Middle Class of the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (~200 CE). Its traditional actions are to drain dampness and promote urination (利水消腫), clear heat and resolve toxins (解毒排膿), and, by the logic of "red nourishes red," to support the blood (養血). Red bean is both food and medicine: cooked with pearl barley to lighten a waterlogged body, and simmered in the Five Red tonic for women who feel tired and pale.

In Western nutrition science, Vigna angularis is studied as a functional legume rich in resistant starch, dietary fibre, proanthocyanidins and other polyphenols, saponins, and plant iron. Modern pharmacology has examined antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic, and gut-supportive activities, with adzuki polyphenols and fibre studied for effects on lipid and glucose metabolism in animal and early human research.

THE EVIDENCE

What the research says.

Modern research on adzuki bean has focused on its polyphenols, resistant starch, and metabolic and antioxidant activity.

COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis): Chemical compositions, physicochemical properties, health benefits, and food applications

Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety · 2022

A 2022 review summarised the composition of adzuki bean — notably its abundant polyphenols, starch and protein — along with reported health benefits and food uses. The authors concluded that adzuki is a promising functional grain whose components could be developed into value-added products, while noting that most benefit data come from laboratory and animal work.

Nutritional Composition, Efficacy, and Processing of Vigna angularis (Adzuki Bean) for the Human Diet: An Overview

Molecules · 2022

A 2022 overview described adzuki as rich in starch and lysine-rich protein that complements cereal diets. It collected evidence — largely preclinical — for antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and for favourable effects on diabetes, diabetic kidney damage, obesity and high-fat-diet cognitive decline, supporting the bean's traditional dual use as food and medicine.

Polyphenol-containing azuki bean (Vigna angularis) seed coats attenuate vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry · 2011

In a 2011 rat study, a diet containing 1% polyphenol-rich adzuki seed coat blunted the rise in blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats over eight weeks. Treated animals showed less vascular superoxide production and lower expression of oxidative and inflammatory markers in the aorta, suggesting the seed-coat polyphenols may protect blood vessels. Human data are lacking.

Cholesterol-lowering activity of adzuki bean (Vigna angularis) polyphenols

Molecular Biology Reports · 2023

A 2023 laboratory study identified catechin and epicatechin 7-O-glucosides as abundant adzuki polyphenols. In cell and micelle models these compounds reduced cholesterol solubility, bound bile acids and lowered cholesterol uptake by intestinal Caco-2 cells, with potency comparable to catechin. The authors suggested this may explain earlier reports of cholesterol-lowering effects, pending human trials.
