Beta vulgaris — the deep-red root vegetable,
added to our Five Reds blend as a modern red superfood alongside classic Chinese tonic foods.
FORMULA ROLE
Why LunarSip uses it.
Beetroot gives LunarSip's Five Reds Energy Tea its deep ruby colour and a gentle earthy sweetness. It is our one modern addition to the classic red-food recipe, chosen because it follows the same idea: red, naturally sweet foods for warmth and energy. In this 6-ingredient blend, beetroot works alongside red date, longan, goji berry and red rice, while brown sugar warms and carries the cup.
HOW IT'S USED
A modern red root for a classic red recipe.
In our formula, beetroot — 甜菜根 — is a modern addition rather than a classical Chinese herb. It follows the same logic as the traditional "Five Reds" recipe: deep-red, naturally sweet foods eaten to support colour, warmth and energy. Dried beetroot adds an earthy sweetness and a rich ruby colour to the cup.
In modern research, beetroot is one of the most studied vegetables for its dietary nitrates, which the body converts to nitric oxide, and for betalain pigments with antioxidant activity. Studies have examined its role in healthy blood flow and exercise performance.
THE EVIDENCE
What the research says.
Modern research on beetroot has focused on dietary nitrates, healthy blood flow, and betalain antioxidants.
