INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Chinese Raspberry/ù Pén Zǐ 覆盆子

Rubus chingii Hu — the unripe green raspberry of East China,
dried and used as a kidney-essence tonic for over 1,500 years.

FORMULA ROLE

Why LunarSip uses it.

Chinese raspberry gives LunarSip’s Ginseng Eight Treasure Tea a tart fruit note and a traditional support role within the 8-herb formula. It helps balance richer roots like ginseng, cistanche, polygonatum, and maca with a brighter berry character. LunarSip uses Chinese raspberry so the blend feels layered, drinkable, and connected to classic Chinese herbal formulation rather than a one-note energy product.

HOW IT'S USED

The essence-holding berry.

In Chinese herbal practices, Fù Pén Zǐ — the dried unripe fruit of Rubus chingii Hu — is documented in Shennong Ben Cao Jing (~200 CE) as a kidney-tonifying, essence-consolidating herb. It is one of the classical herbs used to astringe and hold essence (固精), traditionally supporting reproductive and urinary wellness. The unripe (green) form is preferred over the ripe (red) form for medicinal use — its astringent character is stronger.

In Western herbal traditions, Rubus chingii is the East Asian sister to the common Western raspberry. Modern phytochemistry has documented its triterpenoids, diterpenoids, flavonoids, and ellagitannins. Research has identified antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticomplementary, and antimicrobial activities — though clinical trials remain limited compared to the literature on its phytochemistry.

THE EVIDENCE

What the research says.

Modern research on Fù Pén Zǐ has focused on itsphytochemistry and preclinical pharmacology.Larger clinical trials are still emerging.
