INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Cistanche/Ròu Cōng Róng 肉蓯蓉

Cistanche deserticola — the desert ginseng (沙漠人參),
a yang-tonifying root harvested from the roots of the Haloxylon shrub in Inner Mongolia.

FORMULA ROLE

Why LunarSip uses it.

Cistanche gives LunarSip’s Ginseng Eight Treasure Tea one of its most distinctive traditional root-based roles. It is often discussed in Chinese herbal tradition in relation to stamina, resilience, and deeper daily support. LunarSip pairs it with ginseng, polygonatum, maca, goji, red date, mulberry, and Chinese raspberry so the formula feels complete: warming, layered, and designed for a steady caffeine-free routine rather than a quick stimulant effect.

HOW IT'S USED

The desert root.

In Chinese herbal practices, cistanche is one of the most prized Yang-tonifying herbs. Described in Shennong Ben Cao Jing (~200 CE) and classified in the Upper Class (上品), it is traditionally used to tonify the kidney yang (補腎陽), replenish essence (益精), and support stamina after prolonged depletion. Its slow, warming character makes it a "gentle" yang tonic — used over weeks, not days.

In Western herbal traditions, Cistanche deserticola is studied for its phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) — most notably echinacoside and acteoside — and its polysaccharides. Modern pharmacology suggests roles in anti-fatigue, antioxidant, immune modulation, and neuroprotective activity. The plant grows as a parasite on desert Haloxylon shrubs and is increasingly cultivated to protect wild populations.

THE EVIDENCE

What the research says.

Modern pharmacology has examined cistanche's bioactive compounds acrosshormone regulation, anti-fatigue, and neuroprotection.

POLYSACCHARIDE RESEARCH

Research progress on polysaccharide components of Cistanche deserticola

Journal of Ethnopharmacology · 2022

A review of cistanche polysaccharides — distinct from the phenylethanoid glycosides — and their roles in immunomodulation and antioxidant activity. Authors note polysaccharides may explain part of cistanche's traditional "tonifying" reputation.

Potential mechanism of Cistanche deserticola in the treatment of osteoporosis

Journal of Ethnopharmacology · 2022

This study used network pharmacology and an ovariectomized rat model to examine cistanche's effects on bone metabolism. Research suggests cistanche supports bone density via multi-target pathways consistent with its traditional use for "strengthening sinew and bone."

Cistanche deserticola Y. C. Ma, "Desert ginseng": a review

American Journal of Chinese Medicine · 2012

This foundational review documents cistanche's "broad medicinal functions, especially for use inhormone regulation, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, antioxidative, anti-apoptotic, and anti-fatigue activities." Phenylethanoid glycosides are identified as the primary bioactive class.
