INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Polygonatum/Huáng Jīng 黃精

Polygonatum sibiricum — the rare qi-and-yin dual tonic,
prepared by the classical "nine steamings, nine sun-dryings" method (九蒸九曬).

FORMULA ROLE

Why LunarSip uses it.

Polygonatum gives LunarSip’s Ginseng Eight Treasure Tea a smooth, grounding role within the formula. In Chinese herbal tradition, polygonatum is often associated with steady nourishment rather than sharp stimulation. LunarSip uses it to balance stronger ingredients like ginseng, cistanche, and maca, helping the tea feel more suitable for daily use by men who want sustained support without relying on coffee or energy drinks.

HOW IT'S USED

The nine-times prepared root.

In Chinese herbal practices, polygonatum is one of the rare herbs that tonifies both qi and yinBen Cao Gang Mu (Li Shizhen, 1578) records that it "tonifies all forms of deficiency, regulates cold and heat, replenishes essence and marrow." The classical preparation — 九蒸九曬 (steamed and sun-dried nine times) — softens its raw astringency and deepens its restorative quality, transforming the root from pale yellow to glossy black-brown.

In Western herbal traditions, Polygonatum sibiricum is closely related to the Western Solomon's Seal. Modern pharmacology focuses on its polysaccharides (PSP) — water-soluble bioactive compounds studied for immune modulation, antioxidant activity, gut microbiome support, and anti-aging effects. Steroidal saponins and homoisoflavones contribute additional bioactivity.

THE EVIDENCE

What the research says.

Research onPolygonatum sibiricumpolysaccharides has expanded rapidly in the last decade, centering onimmune, gut, and longevity-related pathways.

Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharide protects hematopoiesis in suppressed bone marrow

Phytomedicine · 2021

An animal study examining whether polygonatum polysaccharide-rich extract supports hematopoietic recovery. Research suggests it may help preserve blood-cell production under bone-marrow stress — consistent with traditional "marrow-replenishing" use (填精髓).
