INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

Sour Jujube Seed/Suān Zǎo Rén 酸棗仁

Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa — the "seed of peaceful sleep,"
the most frequently prescribed herb for restless nights in the Chinese pharmacopoeia.

FORMULA ROLE

Why LunarSip uses it.

Sour jujube seed is the namesake and lead herb of LunarSip's Sleep & Calm Tea. In Chinese herbal tradition it anchors Suan Zao Ren Tang, the 1,800-year-old sleep formula in which it is paired with poria and licorice — the same three herbs that sit at the heart of this 9-herb blend. Lily bulb and longan deepen the calming effect, while mulberry, goji, red date, and polygonatum nourish the blood and yin that a settled night's sleep depends on.

HOW IT'S USED

The seed Chinese physicians reach for at night.

In Chinese herbal practices, Suān Zǎo Rén — 酸棗仁 — is recorded in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (~200 CE) and is the lead herb of Suan Zao Ren Tang, the Han Dynasty sleep formula from the Jin Gui Yao Lue that is still prescribed today. Its traditional actions are to nourish the heart and calm the spirit (養心安神), nourish liver blood (養肝), and restrain sweating (斂汗). Li Shizhen wrote in the Ben Cao Gang Mu that the seed addresses "gallbladder deficiency with inability to sleep." It is the herb Chinese families turn to when the mind races at night.

In Western herbal traditions, Ziziphus seed is increasingly studied as a non-habit-forming botanical for sleep and calm. Its key compounds are jujubosides A and B (saponins), spinosin and other flavonoid C-glycosides, and sanjoinine alkaloids. Modern pharmacology has examined sedative, anxiolytic, and sleep-prolonging activity, with jujubosides and spinosin shown in animal models to interact with GABA and serotonin pathways.

THE EVIDENCE

What the research says.

Modern research on sour jujube seed has focused on jujubosides, spinosin, and their calming and sleep-supportive activity.

The Herbal Medicine Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen) for Sleep Quality Improvements: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Integrative Cancer Therapies · 2023

A 2023 meta-analysis of 9 randomized trials (about 900 participants) found suanzaoren was associated with short-term improvements in self-reported sleep quality versus placebo, and lower insomnia severity at 4 weeks versus benzodiazepines or CBT. No increase in major adverse events was seen, but the authors call for larger, higher-quality trials.

Ziziphus spinosa seeds for insomnia: A review of chemistry and psychopharmacology

Phytomedicine · 2017

A 2017 review compared the chemistry and psychopharmacology of sour jujube seed with benzodiazepines, drawing on preclinical and clinical studies. It concluded that the seed's secondary metabolites appear to modulate GABAergic and serotonergic activity, while noting that the specific therapeutic constituents still require confirmation.

Hypnotic effect of jujubosides from Semen Ziziphi Spinosae

Journal of Ethnopharmacology · 2010

In rats, a 2010 study using EEG recording found that jujubosides (the seed's main saponins) increased total sleep time, with REM sleep rising during the day and light NREM sleep rising at night. In mice, jujubosides also prolonged pentobarbital-induced sleep, and the effect appeared to involve the serotonergic system.
